Out In the World (OIW) is a social organization for LGBT graduate and professional students at Cornell University. We have over 200 members, making us one of the largest graduate and professional student organizations on campus. Our events are open to faculty, staff, undergrads, alumni, and other interested folks from Cornell and Ithaca.
OIW plans social events and gatherings for the entire LGBT community at Cornell. Traditionally, these activities have included weekly Happy Hours at the Statler Lounge (Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m.), monthly dinners in Collegetown, and receptions at the Big Red Barn.
We are interested in trying new events depending on people’s interests, such as organizing movie nights, bowling nights, game nights, outings to concerts, the theater, etc. We also hope to work with other LGBT groups to plan a major campus social event each semester, such as a Halloween party in the fall and a Mardi Gras party in the spring.
OIW usually works closely with the LGBT Resource Center and Haven in organizing events. This year, we hope to join with WOW (Women Out in the World), Out for Business (the Johnson School LGBT group) and Lambda Law (the Law School LGBT group) to ensure that the social needs of graduate and professional students are being adequately met.
